How Creators Can Benefit From Copyright, Royalties and Attribution

Copyright, royalties and attribution is necessary to be familiar with as an original creator. When licensed properly, original creators can make substantial amounts of money from their works by granting certain usages and permissions. Royalties are monetary payments paid to a creator for the ongoing publication and distribution of their work. Attribution is the crediting of a work/piece of content to the original creator.

For many beginners just getting started, learning all of these terms can be very overwhelming, but you need to understand basic terminology in order to be successful.

You can be very successful with your content depending on your brand, licensing and distribution. Many media platforms, like YouTube for example, use industry standard licensing practices. When uploading a piece of content to YouTube you can choose from 2 licenses:

The first option — Standard Youtube License, allows you to grant broadcasting rights of your work only for watching purposes on their platform. This technically means no one can share or repurpose your content in any other form without permission.

The second option — Creative Commons (CC) License, is a specific public copyright license that allows the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work. A CC license is used when an author wants to give people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that they have created.

There are a few different types of Creative Commons licenses; The most basic and simple being CC0 (zero) CC-BY

This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered. Recommended for maximum dissemination and use of licensed materials.

When using Creative Commons licenses, please understand that you may only mark your content with a Creative Commons license if it consists entirely of content that can be licensed by you under the CC BY license. Some examples of such licensable content are:

• Your originally created content

• Other videos marked with a CC BY license

• Videos in the public domain

Depending on the context and license, attribution may or may not be required; with standard copyright and Creative Commons licenses, attribution is necessary. With a work labeled as Creative Commons Zero and/or Public Domain, attribution is not required and you are free to reuse, create, and build upon those works. Over ten years, our brand Stock Footage + has been super successful.

The number one way to sell stock footage is through brand. Building a brand is the number one way to establish a long term relationship with your customer and a long term career in the film industry. After 10 years in this industry, I find that the best media brands are super niche. My brand started out as specifically chroma-key animations… over the course of ten years we’ve expanded into a huge library of content covering a range of categories.

The best signature stock media brands offer a certain flavor of content, like a tattoo artist does with his art. Distributing your library across several different social media platforms is a great strategy when building the infrastructure of your stock media brand. Establishing a theme across your content is the best way to go. A great way to monetize a stock footage brand is to run advertisements over your content; if you can get enough views or engagement in your niche there is space to run advertisement and sponsorship deals. When you have a website up and running you can get paid for sponsored posts and features — you can get paid to test out and review cameras and new equipment.

The main goal is to increase the value of your stock footage brand. We encourage that if you are looking to create a stock footage brand and you are passionate about film to stay active in a community. We have built a community for beginner and advanced veterans in search of more knowledge. On top of advertising you will be selling stock footage. You can also sell special effects, e-courses, and accessories.

Written word content is a great way to increase the value behind your brand by writing about things that matter. Alongside of monetization through marketing, another tactic to building a stock media brand is to provide valuable substance on top of your content. Another monetize technique is through affiliate links and authorized reselling. Selling other brands products. Big brands will offer you a certain percentage of sales and sometimes a special offers when you become a seller for their product through your website.

With patience and hard work a stock media brand can be a super successful idea, and with the right leverage you can create an actual recurring revenue stream.

Establishing Value As A Creator

Establishing values will bring you a long way through your journey to success. Learning how to invest money in your values can manifest a whole new opportunity for you. 

The first thing you should definitely have in mind before thinking about making a dollar is figuring out your purest value and applying energy and hard work into your craftsmanship to become a valuable asset to another individual that can bring you the same or more value in return.

In order to find your purest value, take the time to know yourself. Instead of focusing on what you don’t have all the time, focus on what you can bring to the table. Let your self shine because you will start to notice the bright things and the value you can bring to others. Know your worth!

Once you’ve found the purest value within yourself, reach out to other individuals with value to manifest greater opportunities.

Can anybody working in arts and media, exceedingly multiply the growth of ANY company and land a production career with a super successful serial entrepreneur? Well technically, yes, but hard work plays a tremendous role in getting there. Someone may have a high profiting business in the real world but it will be unsuccessful online without the proper creative approach. This is where creators sell the sizzle, because they have the steak to back it up; an online media portfolio.

The key to finding an opportunity with The D-Rock Strategy is to connect with everyone. Send tons of emails, leave massive amounts of comments and connect with a million people. Instagram, Youtube, and Facebook are just social networks and should be treated as such… this is a place for you to actually connect with other people and build real relationships that can take you deeper than the platform. Provide up front value with every interaction you have, keep your mind and business open to new ideas and the opportunities will become endless.

In 2018, the media industry is at an all time high, and it is expected to continue growing strong through 2020 and beyond….
